What is the Bayside FTP?
FTP stands for "file transfer protocol" and it enables
people to transfer any type of file across the internet via an FTP interface,
much like HTTP (hyper text transfer protocol) allows the transfer of HTML
(hyper text markup language) files via your web browser.
There are many ways to access an FTP site, the most common of which
are FTP clients (i.e. WSFTP or Fetch) or browser windows. The only drawback to
the later option is that some browsers do not support FTP access. FTP sites can
be accessed by PCs and MACs and FTP clients exist for both platforms (i.e.
WSFTP [PC] Fetch [MAC]).
Setting-up your computer
To place your files onto the Bayside FTP, you must have either an
FTP client or a browser that supports direct FTP access. If your computer
requires an FTP client and you do not yet have one installed, you must download
one and install it. Any FTP client will work, however, we provide links to
download two very common clients,
WSFTP for PC users and
Fetch for MAC users.
If your browser supports FTP access, you will simply enter the FTP
URL (ftp.baysideprinting.com) into your browser address bar to enter the FTP
site. Microsoft Internet Explorer offers the most support for browser based FTP
use, however, depending on your installation of IE, your browser may or may not
support a graphic FTP interface. AOL users also have the option of using the
built in FTP features AOL provides, located in Internet > FTP.
You may find that you are unable to login unless you change a
"FTP" transfer setting to "PASSIVE FTP TRANSFER" in your
browser/FTP client settings.
In Internet Explorer this setting is under Tools > Internet
Options > Advanced - within the "Browsing" section.
If you are using Internet Explorer on the MAC - you would change
your internet options under Control Panels > Internet > Advanced
In Fetch- this setting is under Customize > Preferences
> Firewall
If you will be transfering files with Bayside Printing often, we
recommend that you purchase WSFTP Pro ($39.95 PC) or Fetch ($25.00 MAC). These
FTP clients will allow you to make quick, easy transfers to our FTP site.
Compressing your file
In order to speed up your transfers and avoid potential file
corruption, we ask that you compress your files before submitting them to the
Bayside FTP. PC users can use WinZip and MAC users can use
Stuffit to compress their files. If you are unable to compress your
file, you may still send it to Bayside, however, it may take significantly more
time to upload large files.
FTP Settings
If you are using an FTP client to access the Bayside FTP, you must
configure it correctly with the Host, User, and Password settings. Below are
the settings to access the Bayside FTP for the two most common FTP clients,
WSFTP (PC users) and Fetch (MAC users). If you are accessing the FTP through
your browser, these settings will not matter to you.
WSFTP Settings (PC users)
Host Name/Address: ftp.baysideprinting.com
Host Type: Automatic detect
User ID: [call Bayside at (281)209-9500 to obtain an User ID and Password]
Password:
Fetch Settings (MAC users)
Host: ftp.baysideprinting.com
User: [call Bayside at (281)209-9500 to obtain a User ID and Password]
Password:
Host Directory:(This would be your private folder - or Public if you do not
request a secure folder)
Logging-on to the FTP
Once you have installed and set-up your FTP client and compressed
your file, you need to log-on to the FTP to conduct your transfer. To do this,
start your FTP client software and confirm that the settings are correct for
the Bayside FTP (see FTP Settings). Now click the
button on your FTP client which says "Connect" or "OK" to
make the connection to the FTP site. If your connection has been successful,
you will see folders such as "Public" in the "remote files"
portion of your client window.
Locating your compressed file
Now that you are connected to the Bayside FTP, you must locate the
file you compressed for transfer on your local computer. This can be done
within your FTP client by browsing your local hard drive with the navigation it
provides you. With the file located you are ready to upload it to the FTP.
Uploading files to the FTP
There are two ways to upload your files to the FTP once connected.
The first method is to drag-and-drop your compressed file onto the Remote
Computer portion of your FTP client. The second method is to use the browsing
functions of your FTP client to locate your file on your hard disk and then use
the FTP client's "upload button" (often an arrow pointing to the computer to
which you want your file transferred).
If you are accessing the FTP through your browser, you may either
copy and paste your file onto the FTP or drag-and-drop it into the appropriate
folder.
Sending a confirmation email
